Highveld deals with the theme of crime in South Africa. It specifically challenges the apathy of witnesses to crime and the desensitization of a society that is constantly being exposed to it.
The Illustration is a satire of violence and crime as it bares resemblance to a coat of arms – a reference to the essential source of trouble and temptation that was brought to Africa centuries ago, the European settler and his way of life. The illustration is made up of elements representing the Highveld (term for geographical area of land that is of high altitude and subject to dry conditions), violence and temptation and the contrast between nature industry and culture.
The insignia reads: “qui tacet consentit” – Silence gives consent.
